NFSC Programs

CanSkate (Ages 4+)

Learn to skate for those who want to figure skate, play hockey, speed skate or who just want to skate for fun. CanSkate teaches the fundamental skills of skating in a fun group environment where skaters participate at their own level of interest and skill. Our certified professional coaches and trained program assistants will ensure that proper skating technique is learned right from the beginning. For optimum development we recommend that children skate twice a week. Skating is a sport where skills are learned by feel and continuous repetition. Badges and incentive ribbons are earned as skaters advance. Helmets are MANDATORY for the Canskate program and may be available from the Club if the skater does not have one of their own.

STARSkate (Beginners) Ages 6+

For skaters that have completed Stage 3 of the CanSkate program and are keen to acquire more figure skating skills. The STARSkate program continues to develop the fundamental skills learned in Can Skate and introduces skaters to jumping, spinning and ice dancing. Skaters will each be given their own program to skate to and will work toward taking tests. Skaters may also choose to participate in competitions. Lessons are taught in group and private lesson formats. Private lesions are arranged with Rachel Stewart, our club professional coach. Skaters are encouraged to skate at least twice a week.

STARSkate Test Program (Ages 8+)

The STARSkate program is for skaters who wish to develop higher level skills. The program provides the opportunity for personal growth and the development of important life skills such as goal-setting, self-discipline, confidence, time management, healthy lifestyle and coping strategies to deal with success and failure. Sessions run Monday STARSkate, Wednesday STARskate, Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Private lessons are available and must be arranged with the Coach.

AdultSkate

Nelson Figure Skating Club is prepared to sponsor adult skating sessions and synchronized skating programs if there is enough interest.  The interest in adult skating has been developing in Canada; there are now adult competitions to the national level, as well as opportunities to continue to develop as a test skater.  Drop-in sessions are now being offered by the NFSC, so dust of your skates and get in shape!  Private lessons may be arranged with the Coach (Please contact Rachel Stewart).
