Nelson Coach Wins Best of the Best CanSkate Coach Award

(May 6, 2009) Nelson Figure Skating Club coach Rachel Stewart has been selected as one of the Best of the Best CanSkate Coaches by Skate Canada.  Stewart shares this award with only nine other professional coaches in Canada.

“I’m so thrilled and honoured to have been chosen” says Stewart.

Stewart was nominated by the Nelson Figure Skating Club last fall.  Her nomination included an in depth description of her program and skills described by Laura Carr, a national level figure skating judge.  Stewart was short listed to a top 20 in December, 2008.  In March Stewart submitted a video filmed by two volunteer photographers, Larrie Carr and Eddie Volcano that illustrated the on ice activities of the Nelson CanSkate program as well as program materials to seal her top ten placing.

This award reflects the many positive changes and growth of the club over the past four years.

“Rachel's capacity to adapt and grow has greatly contributed to this development,” says Phyllis Nash, Club President.

Nash notes that Stewart is worthy of this award not only as acknowledgement of her current skills but her positive, flexible approach and attitude to learning and advancing her skills as a coach over the past four years. This positive approach to coaching and working to deliver the CanSkate program at a high standard is clearly reflected by the high number of returning skaters and wait lists for CanSkate.

As her reward for being a top ten coach, Skate Canada is providing Stewart with an all-expenses paid trip to the National Coaching Conference in Edmonton this June.  While there she will also receive an award at the Skate Canada Annual Awards Banquet.

Although spring skating is nearly over for another season, the club will be offering a Summer CanSkate program this August.  Registration is Saturday, May 30, 2009 from 11am-1pm at the Nelson and District Community Complex.  For more information call Jane Macleod at 250.352-6510.

About the Nelson Figure Skating Club:

Skating Programs for all levels and ages

The Nelson Figure Skating Club (NFSC) teaches more than skating. We have a nationally standardized Skate Canada program for every member of your family from pre-school to adult. We are Nelson’s ONLY provider of learn-to-skate lessons. The goal of the Club and Skate Canada is to enable every Canadian to participate in skating throughout their lifetime for fun, fitness and/or achievement. To this end the Nelson Figure Skating club will provide a wide variety of skating programs given that there is sufficient interest for sustainability. NFSC participates in KidSport (supplements cost in low income families) and gives a 10% discount for the second child in a family who registers in a NFSC program in any year.
